TL;DR — Quick verdict
Updated August 202614 min readDropshipping still works in 2026, but only above a real budget floor. Under $250 you are running an organic content business, not an ads business. The realistic paid-ads entry point is $1,200 – $1,500: roughly $130 platform and apps, $120 samples, $250 creative and $700 of ad spend. Expect to burn two products before one works, price at 3x landed cost, and tell customers the delivery window before they pay.
| Starting budget | Route | Stack | Ad spend | First sale | Honest odds |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Under $250 | Organic only | Shopify $1/mo promo + DSers free | $0 | 4 – 10 weeks | Low. Content volume is the entire business. |
| $250 – $750 | One paid test | Shopify Basic + DSers free | $25/day × 12 days | 1 – 3 weeks | One shot. Test a single product. |
| $750 – $2,500 | Standard Meta cycle | Shopify Basic + DSers + Judge.me | $50/day × 14 days | 5 – 21 days | Workable. Budget for 2 – 3 products. |
| $2,500+ | Parallel testing | Shopify Basic + CJ at 10+ orders/day | $100/day × 20+ days | 3 – 10 days | Best odds. Ad account risk becomes the bottleneck. |

What it actually costs to launch
The "start with $100" claim survives because nobody itemises it. Here is the full list for the first three months, in the two versions that exist in practice: lean, where you have time but no money, and standard, where you intend to run paid traffic.
| Line item | Lean | Standard | What people get wrong |
|---|---|---|---|
| Store platform, first 3 months | $3 | $117 | Shopify at $1/mo for 3 months, then $39/mo. The promo is real; the renewal is what people forget. |
| Domain, 1 year | $14 | $14 | Buy it at the registrar, not through the platform. Renewal is $16 – $22. |
| Theme | $0 | $0 – $380 | Shopify Dawn is free and converts. Premium themes are a post-validation purchase. |
| Apps, first 3 months | $0 | $60 – $180 | Judge.me reviews $15/mo, Vitals $29.99/mo, Klaviyo free under 250 contacts. |
| Product samples | $60 | $120 – $200 | Two or three units with express shipping. Non-negotiable — you cannot write ad copy for a product you have never opened. |
| Ad creative | $0 | $250 – $600 | UGC video runs $80 – $250 per clip. Filming it yourself costs 6 – 10 hours instead. |
| Ad budget for the first test | $0 | $700 – $1,400 | At $50/day this is 14 – 28 days. Below $400 total, paid ads produce noise, not data. |
| Company registration | $0 | $0 – $500 | Not needed on day 1 in most countries. Sole trader is fine until you clear roughly $2k/mo. |
Launch cost breakdown, first three months. Lean total: about $77 plus your time. Standard total: $1,261 – $2,791 depending on creative and ad budget.
The only math that decides whether you survive
Every store lives or dies on one number: how much gross profit is left per order to pay for advertising. Work it out before you pick a product, not after your first $300 of ad spend.
Break-even ROAS is selling price divided by gross profit per unit. At $49.95 with $35.20 of gross profit, that is 1.42. Every dollar of ad spend has to return $1.42 before you have made a cent.
The trap is the $19.95 product. On a $6 landed cost it looks like a 70% margin, but $12.98 of gross profit means you need a $12.98 cost per purchase. At a $18 CPM and a 2% conversion rate, that is not happening on cold traffic.
| Line | Amount | Running total |
|---|---|---|
| Selling price | $49.95 | $49.95 |
| Product cost (AliExpress) | − $8.40 | $41.55 |
| Shipping to customer | − $4.60 | $36.95 |
| Payment fee (2.9% + 30¢) | − $1.75 | $35.20 |
| Gross profit before ads | $35.20 | 70.5% margin |
| Break-even cost per purchase | $35.20 | Break-even ROAS 1.42 |
| Ad cost at 2.0 ROAS | − $24.98 | $10.22 |
| Net profit per order | $10.22 | 20.5% net margin |
Worked example: a $49.95 product with a $13.00 landed cost, sold through Shopify Payments at 2.9% + 30¢. Excludes the $39/mo platform fee and refunds.

If you only take one decision from this page
Start on Shopify Basic. It is $39/mo plus 2.9% + 30¢ per online card sale, and the $1/mo promo covers your first three months. WooCommerce is cheaper on paper and costs more in practice unless you already run servers. The full comparison, including the 2% third-party gateway penalty and BigCommerce's revenue caps, is on theplatforms page.
- Checkout that converts on mobile out of the box
- DSers and every supplier app integrate natively
- 0% extra fee when you use Shopify Payments
- Costs $39/mo whether you sell or not
$1/mo for the first 3 months on Basic, then $39/mo. We earn a commission if you stay past the trial.
Who should not do this
No other guide will tell you this, because the incentive is to keep you reading. Skip dropshipping entirely if any of the following is true.
- The money you would spend is money you need. Most first stores lose it, and the loss is fast — two weeks, not two years.
- You have under 10 hours a week and no ad budget. That combination has no working version.
- You want passive income. Fulfilment, customer service and creative production are a daily job at any real volume.
- You need profit within 30 days. The realistic timeline to consistent profit is three to six months.
- You are not willing to disclose 12 to 20 day delivery. Hiding it produces chargebacks, and payment processors freeze payouts over it.
How this site is different
Everything here is free and stays free. Some links are referral links, which is how the site is funded, and the recommendation does not change because of it — the platform page tells you exactly where Shopify costs you more than it should.
- Every number is dated
- Pricing was verified in August 2026. Vendors change plans quietly, so each figure carries the month it was checked.
- Downsides are in the main text
- Not in a footnote. Revenue caps, gateway penalties, delivery windows and refund rates sit next to the feature they undermine.
- No gated content
- No email wall, no Discord, no course. If a page ends by asking for your address, we have failed at the page.
