Do I need a paid spy tool to find dropshipping products?
Short answer
Not under about 20 orders a day. Paid spy tools cost $30-$99 a month and show you what other people are already running. The free stack — the Meta Ad Library, TikTok Creative Center and AliExpress order sorting — surfaces the same products roughly 3-7 days later, and that lag does not matter at low volume.
| Paid tool | Price | Free alternative | What you actually lose |
|---|---|---|---|
| Minea | ~$49/mo | Meta Ad Library + manual filters | Filtering speed and engagement sorting. A few hours a week. |
| PiPiADS | ~$77/mo | TikTok Creative Center | Landing page archives and 3-7 days of lead time. |
| Dropship.io | ~$39/mo | AliExpress order-count sorting | Competitor revenue estimates, which are ranges not facts. |
| Sell The Trend | ~$39.97/mo | Manual research plus DSers | A curated feed. Useful, not decisive. |
Paid research tools versus the free alternative that does most of the same job.
What you are actually buying
Paid spy tools sell speed and filtering, not access. Everything they show is public: ads running on Meta and TikTok, products with visible order counts on AliExpress. The tool aggregates and sorts it.
At $30-$99 a month, that convenience is worth it when you are testing weekly and your time is the constraint. Before your first sale, it is 6-20% of a first testing budget spent on a feed you cannot act on.
The free stack that does most of the job
Meta Ad Library. Free, official, complete. Search by keyword or page and filter for ads running three or more weeks. Nobody keeps paying to run a losing ad for a month, which makes longevity the single most honest public signal available.
The order to run these checks in, and the kill signal for each, is in how to validate a product.
TikTok Creative Center. Top-performing ads and trending products by region, straight from TikTok. It is roughly the free version of every TikTok spy tool, a few days behind.
AliExpress order sorting. Sort by orders, filter recent reviews with photos. This shows what is actually shipping in volume right now, rather than what someone is advertising.
Your own feed. Deliberately train it: search the niche, watch the ads to completion, engage with competitors. Within a week the algorithm becomes a free research tool that surfaces products before the databases index them.
The lag does not matter as much as people think
A paid tool might show you a product three to seven days earlier, and being first is not the advantage people think. That matters if you are at 200 orders a day competing for the same supplier stock. Under 20 orders a day, it does not — your constraint is creative quality and margin, not being first.
More importantly: everyone in the tool sees the same list. A product that is trending in a spy tool is trending for every subscriber simultaneously, which is a decent definition of saturation.
When to buy one
Three conditions, all at once:
- You are testing at least one new product a week
- Your time, not your budget, is the bottleneck
- You already have a validated process for judging products (landed cost, margin, break-even ROAS)
Without the third, a spy tool just accelerates the rate at which you test bad products.
What actually decides whether a product works
Not where you found it. Run every candidate through the same filter:
- Landed cost under $25 and a defensible 3x markup — check it in the break-even calculator
- A problem visible on camera in three seconds
- Not already being sold at 2x cost by a competitor with a real brand
- A supplier with fast shipping, which is the supplier decision, not a research decision
A mediocre product with $35 of gross profit and honest 8-day shipping beats an exciting one with $12 of margin every time.
