Costs & pricing
What things really cost, per month and per order.
Do I need to pay for a Shopify theme?
No. Dawn is free, fast, and converts fine, and the checkout — where most stores actually lose the sale — is Shopify's and identical on every theme. A premium theme costs $180 to $400 once and is a post-validation purchase, sensible after roughly 100 orders on one product. Nobody has ever refused to buy because of a free theme.
Read the answerHow much does CJdropshipping charge?
There is no subscription at any volume. CJdropshipping is free to join and you pay per order — product cost plus shipping, quoted as one landed figure. On a typical product that is around $13.00 delivered to a US address. The costs people miss are the extras: branded inserts from $0.05 a unit, and unit prices that sometimes sit above AliExpress for the identical item.
Read the answerHow much does it cost to start dropshipping?
About $150 if you go organic-only, and $1,200-$1,500 for a fair paid-ads test. The paid figure breaks down as roughly $130 of platform and apps for three months, $120 of samples, $250 of creative and $700 of ad budget. Anything under $400 of ad spend buys noise instead of usable data.
Read the answerIs DSers free, and what does the paid plan add?
Yes. The DSers free plan covers up to 3,000 products, one store and unlimited order processing, which is enough to run a store to $10k a month. The paid tiers ($19.90 and $49.90 a month) add multiple stores, bulk mapping and automation you do not need until you are running several stores or several hundred orders a day.
Read the answerShopify Basic vs Grow: when is the upgrade worth it?
Stay on Basic until roughly $33,000 a month. Grow costs $66/mo more than Basic and saves 0.2% on the card rate, so the upgrade pays for itself at $66 divided by 0.002, which is $33,000 of monthly revenue. On annual billing the gap narrows to $50/mo and break-even drops to $25,000. If you cannot use Shopify Payments it pays back at about $5,500.
Read the answerWhat are the hidden costs of dropshipping?
A working store costs $310 to $460 a month at 100 orders, not the $39 the platform advertises. The gaps are card fees at 2.9% + 30¢ per order, which is $175 on $5,000 of revenue, apps at $45-$90/mo once reviews and email are live, and refunds at 1-3% of revenue with a $15 fee on every dispute.
Read the answerWhy are Spocket products more expensive?
Because you are buying from US and EU wholesalers holding real stock, not from a factory in Guangdong. You get 2-7 day delivery and a normal refund rate, and you pay 20-40% more per unit plus $39.99/mo. On a $79.95 product that moves break-even ROAS from 1.44 to 1.67, which is fine. On a $29.95 product it goes from 1.51 to 1.84, which is not.

AliExpress or Alibaba for dropshipping?
AliExpress while you are dropshipping, Alibaba once you are buying stock. AliExpress ships single units directly to your customer with card payment and escrow. Alibaba is wholesale: minimum orders typically start at 100 to 500 units, you pay a 30% deposit by bank transfer, and production plus freight runs 3 to 8 weeks before anything is sellable.
Read the answerCan you do dropshipping with custom packaging?
Yes, and only one item is worth buying early. A branded insert card runs $0.05 to $0.20 a unit at a 200-500 minimum order and 3-5 days of lead time. Everything else needs 500 to 1,000 units: a custom mailer at $0.15-$0.45, a printed box at $0.60-$2.50 with 10-18 days of lead time. Do not commit that to a product with an 80% chance of failing.
Read the answerCJdropshipping vs DSers: which should you use?
Use DSers while you are validating — it is free and gives you the whole AliExpress catalogue. Move to CJdropshipping once one product passes five to ten orders a day, because its US and EU warehouses cut delivery from 12-20 days to 2-5 and it offers custom packaging at low minimums. Compare landed cost, not item price, before switching.
Read the answerHow do you find a private sourcing agent?
Do not look for one until you are doing about 30 orders a day on a single product, or 20 if it is heavy. Below that you are not interesting enough to get good rates or fast replies. Above it, an agent takes 10-25% off your unit cost and runs a dedicated 4-9 day line. You pay by bank transfer with no escrow, so vet through two other stores before you send anything.
Read the answerHow long does AliExpress shipping take to Australia?
AliExpress Standard Shipping takes 8 to 18 days to an Australian address door to door, including 1-3 days of supplier processing. Cainiao Expedited runs 7 to 14 days for $2-$4 more per order. Once you sell more than AUD 75,000 into Australia in 12 months you must register and charge 10% GST at checkout on consignments up to AUD 1,000, not at the border.
Read the answerHow long does AliExpress shipping take to Canada?
AliExpress Standard Shipping takes 8 to 18 days to a Canadian address door to door, including 1-3 days of supplier processing. Cainiao Expedited runs 7 to 14 days for $2-$4 more per order. Goods shipped from China are only duty and tax free under CAD 20, so almost every order you sell can be assessed GST or HST plus a CAD 9.95 postal handling fee on delivery.
Read the answerHow long does AliExpress shipping take to Germany?
AliExpress Standard Shipping takes 7 to 15 days to Germany door to door, including 1-3 days of supplier processing. Cainiao Expedited runs 5 to 10 days for $2-$4 more. Since July 2021 every import is taxable: consignments up to EUR 150 can have 19% German VAT collected at checkout through IOSS, and above EUR 150 VAT and duty are charged at the border.
Read the answerHow long does AliExpress shipping take to the UK?
AliExpress Standard Shipping takes 7 to 15 days to the UK door to door, including 1-3 days of supplier processing. Cainiao Expedited runs 5 to 10 days for $2-$4 more per order. Since 2021 there is no low-value VAT exemption: consignments up to £135 have 20% VAT due at the point of sale, which is your obligation as the seller, not the courier's.
Read the answerHow long does AliExpress shipping take to the USA?
AliExpress Standard Shipping takes 8 to 20 days door to door in the US, including 1-3 days of supplier processing. Cainiao Expedited runs 6-12 days for $2-$4 more per order. Add 7-21 days for roughly six weeks around Chinese New Year, when factories close and the backlog clears slowly.
Read the answerWhat are the best dropshipping suppliers for fast US shipping?
CJdropshipping is the practical answer: 2 to 5 days on SKUs held in its US warehouse, free to join, pay per order. Zendrop's US-fulfilled products run 5 to 8 days and the branding features sit behind a $79/mo Pro plan. Spocket ships 2 to 7 days from US wholesalers at 20-40% higher unit cost, from $39.99/mo. Plain AliExpress is 8 to 20 days.
Read the answerWhat do you do when a supplier goes out of stock mid-campaign?
Pause the ad campaign within 24 hours and leave the product page live. At 6.7 orders a day, a week of unnoticed stockout is 47 orders you cannot fulfil, which arrives as refunds and disputes two weeks later. Then work the fallback in order: re-map to a second supplier, email affected customers before they email you, and refund proactively past day three.
Read the answerWhat is a fulfilment agent and when do you need one?
A fulfilment agent, or 3PL, stores stock you have already bought and ships it to your customers. Storage runs from roughly $0.35 per unit per month plus a pick-and-pack fee per order. That is a different job from a sourcing agent, who buys and ships on your behalf without you owning inventory. You need one only once you are pre-buying stock, which is usually past 30 orders a day.
Read the answerWhich suppliers have EU warehouses for dropshipping?
CJdropshipping ships 3 to 6 days from its German warehouse on stocked SKUs, against 7 to 15 days from China. AliExpress listings held in DE, CZ or PL run 2 to 5 days. The speed matters less than what it removes: goods already inside the EU skip the customs step entirely, so there is no import VAT collected at the door and no EUR 6-12 handling fee.
Read the answerZendrop vs CJdropshipping: which one should you use?
CJdropshipping for most stores: free to join, pay per order, 2 to 5 days from US warehouse stock, and a sourcing team that quotes products it does not already list. Zendrop is the easier interface and needs the $79/mo Pro plan for branded packaging and automatic fulfilment, which works out to about $1 per order at 80 orders a month and $3.95 at 20.

Budgets, benchmarks and account problems.
Can you start dropshipping with no ad budget?
Yes, for about $150 and 15 to 20 hours a week instead of $50 a day. The plan is five short videos a day on one product from one account, for 30 days. Expect 4 to 10 weeks to the first sale. The number that predicts success is not views or followers — it is 3-second retention above 60%, and below 40% the first second is wrong.
Read the answerHow many creatives do I need to test a product?
Four to six creatives per product, in a single Advantage+ Shopping campaign at $50 a day. Build them on five distinct hooks — problem, result, unboxing, comparison, objection — rather than five edits of the same video. Ten creatives on $50 a day gives each one $5 a day, which is below the spend needed to tell a winner from noise.
Read the answerHow much does a UGC video cost?
A UGC clip runs $80 to $250. At $80 you get one creator, one take, no input on the script and no revisions. At $250 you get your own hook written into the brief, B-roll, burned-in captions and one round of changes. A four-creative test therefore costs $320 to $1,000 bought, against 6 to 10 hours if you film it yourself.
Read the answerHow much should I spend testing a dropshipping product?
$50 a day for five days, so $250 to a first verdict. At an $18 US CPM that buys roughly 2,800 impressions a day, which is enough to read cost per add-to-cart by day 3. Below $25 a day the data cannot distinguish a bad product from an unlucky week, and under $400 total you are better off running organic.
Read the answerSpark Ads or dark posts on TikTok: which should you use?
Spark Ads by default. They boost a real organic post, so the likes, comments and profile link carry into the ad, and CPMs run cheaper — TikTok sits at $6-$12 in the US against Meta's $12-$25. The cost is an authorisation code from the creator and a comment section you do not control. Use dark posts for volume creative testing and for anything you do not want publicly attached.
Read the answerWhat CTR is good on Facebook ads for ecommerce?
Judge outbound CTR, not the all-clicks figure Meta shows by default. Above 1.5% is good for ecommerce, 1.0% to 1.5% is workable, and below 0.8% means the creative is dead — kill it on day 3 instead of waiting for the campaign to end. A CTR problem is always a creative problem, and it cannot be fixed with targeting or bids.
Read the answerWhat is the best product title formula for Google Shopping?
Brand, then product type, then the key attribute, then size and colour — front-loaded and kept under 70 characters, because that is roughly where titles get truncated. Google matches the search query against the title before any other field, so there is no ad copy to write: the feed is the ad, and the title is about 80% of it.
Read the answerWhat settings should I use for an Advantage+ Shopping campaign?
One Advantage+ Shopping campaign per product, budget set at campaign level at $50 a day, highest-volume bidding with no cost cap, country-only targeting, existing-customer budget cap at 0-10%, all Advantage+ placements on, Purchase as the conversion event, and 4 to 6 creatives in the single ad set. Then no edits for 72 hours, because every change restarts the learning phase.
Read the answerWhen should you scale a winning dropshipping product?
After five consecutive days above your break-even ROAS, with gross profit confirmed against real supplier invoices rather than estimates. Duplicate the campaign at double the budget and leave the original running, because editing a live budget restarts the learning phase and costs 2 to 3 days. Expect ROAS to drop 15-30% as you scale and judge profit per day instead of the ratio.
Read the answerWhy is my Facebook ad account restricted, and how do I get it back?
Most restrictions are automated, and roughly half are reversed within 48 hours if you request a review through Business Manager. The usual triggers in this niche are health or income claims in ad copy, a new payment method on a new account, and landing pages whose policies do not match the ad. Do not open a new account on the same payment method or device — that turns a temporary restriction into a permanent one.

Margins & benchmarks
The maths that decides whether a store survives.
How do you calculate break-even ROAS?
Divide selling price by gross profit per order. On a $49.95 product with $8.40 of product cost, $4.60 of shipping and $1.75 of payment fees, gross profit is $35.20 and break-even ROAS is 49.95 divided by 35.20, which is 1.42. Break-even CPA is simpler still: it is the gross profit figure itself, $35.20, and that is the number sitting in your ads manager.
Read the answerHow long does it take for dropshipping to make money?
A first sale arrives within days of your first test. A product that actually clears break-even usually takes two or three tests and 6 to 14 weeks, because roughly four in five products fail. Recovering the $1,200-$1,500 of setup takes about 137 orders at $10.22 of net profit each, which is 20 days once something works and never if nothing does.
Read the answerHow many orders a day is a $10k/mo dropshipping store?
At a $49.95 average order value, $10,000 a month is 200 orders, which is 6.7 a day. That needs about 335 sessions a day at a 2% conversion rate and roughly $167 a day of ad spend at a 2.0 ROAS. What you actually keep is around $1,600 to $1,900 a month after ads, apps, the platform and refunds.
Read the answerWhat does a chargeback actually cost you?
Far more than the $15 dispute fee. On the standard $49.95 order at a 2.0 ROAS you lose the reversed revenue, $13.00 of product and shipping already paid, the $1.75 payment fee that is not returned, the $15.00 dispute fee and $24.98 of ad spend. That is minus $54.73 against the plus $10.22 a clean order nets, so one dispute erases the profit from 5.4 orders.
Read the answerWhat is a good conversion rate for a dropshipping store?
From cold paid traffic, 1.5-3% is normal and anything above 3% is strong. Below 1.2% on 500+ sessions the store is the problem, not the traffic. The intermediate numbers matter more for diagnosis: 8%+ add-to-cart rate and 45%+ checkout completion are what a healthy funnel looks like.
Read the answerWhat is a good ROAS for dropshipping?
There is no universal answer — the only figure that matters is your break-even ROAS, which is selling price divided by gross profit per unit. On a $49.95 product with $35.20 of gross profit that is 1.42, so anything above 1.42 makes money. A 2.0 ROAS is excellent on a $30 product and loss-making on a $150 product with thin margins.
Read the answerWhat profit margin should a dropshipping store have?
Aim for a 60-70% gross margin before ads and 15-25% net margin after them. That requires pricing at a minimum of 3x your landed cost — on a $13 landed cost, $39 or more. Below a 2.5x markup, break-even ROAS climbs above 1.8 and there is no room left for a bad testing week or Q4 CPMs.

Can you dropship on BigCommerce?
Yes, and BigCommerce takes 0% on every plan. The catch is the annual online sales cap: $50,000 on Standard at $39/mo, $180,000 on Plus at $105/mo, $400,000 on Pro. A store doing $4,200 a month already exceeds Standard over a year. The 0% headline also saves nothing in practice, because the payment processor charges roughly 2.59% + 49¢.
Read the answerCan you dropship on Wix?
Yes, and it is the cheapest legitimate store at $29 a month on Core with 0% platform commission and a 2.9% + 30¢ card fee. The catch is the supplier side: there is no first-class DSers or AliExpress path, so you are on Modalyst or Spocket at $39.99/mo. The template also locks once you publish, which makes a redesign a rebuild rather than a theme swap.
Read the answerHow do you connect DSers to Shopify?
Install DSers from the Shopify App Store, accept the permission screen, then link your AliExpress account in DSers Settings. Import the product, map every Shopify variant to a supplier SKU, and set the shipping line per product before you push it live. Six steps and about ten minutes. Variant mapping is where it goes wrong, and it goes wrong silently.
Read the answerShopify or WooCommerce for dropshipping?
Shopify Basic at $39 a month for about 90% of people, because every supplier app integrates natively and the mobile checkout converts without configuration. WooCommerce is genuinely cheaper — $30-$80 a month all-in — but costs 10-20 hours of setup and 3-5 hours a month of maintenance. If your time is worth more than $10 an hour, Shopify is the cheaper option.
Read the answerWhat are Shopify transaction fees, and how do you avoid the 2%?
On Shopify Basic in the US you pay 2.9% + 30 cents per online card sale through Shopify Payments. If you use a third-party gateway instead, Shopify adds 2% on top of whatever that gateway charges — 1% on Grow and 0.6% on Advanced. The only way to avoid the extra fee is to use Shopify Payments, which is not available in every country.
Read the answerWhat are the best free Shopify apps for a new store?
Five tools launch a store and four are free: the DSers free plan, the Dawn theme, the Meta pixel with Conversions API, and CapCut for editing. The fifth is Shopify itself at $39/mo. Add Judge.me and Klaviyo on their free tiers at your first sale. Every other app is a solution to a problem you cannot yet measure, and app creep reaches $220/mo in three months.
Read the answerWhat if Shopify Payments is not available in my country?
You pay Shopify an extra 2% of every order on Basic, on top of whatever your gateway charges. On $5,000 of monthly revenue that is $100. Three options: absorb it, upgrade to Grow where the penalty halves to 1% and the upgrade pays back at $5,500 a month instead of $33,000, or move to WooCommerce at $30-$80/mo where no such fee exists.

Company setup, VAT and the boring compulsory layer.
Do I need an LLC or a registered company to start dropshipping?
Not on day one in most countries. Shopify Payments and Stripe will onboard a sole trader or private individual in the US, UK and most of the EU. Register once you clear roughly $2,000 a month, need to reclaim VAT, or want liability separation. What you do need immediately is a real business address, a working contact page and a refund policy — payment providers check those before releasing your first payout.
Read the answerDo I need to collect sales tax on dropshipping in the US?
You collect sales tax only in states where you have nexus. Physical nexus starts in your home state from the first order. Economic nexus starts when you pass a state threshold, most commonly $100,000 of sales into that state in a year, with some states also counting 200 separate transactions. Below those thresholds you generally do not register in that state.
Read the answerHow does VAT work when dropshipping into the EU?
There is no low-value exemption. Since 1 July 2021 every commercial import into the EU is subject to VAT. Up to EUR 150 you can register for IOSS and charge the customer's local rate at checkout — 19% in Germany, 21% in the Netherlands, 27% in Hungary. Above EUR 150, VAT plus customs duty is charged at the border, normally to your customer.
Read the answerIs dropshipping legal?
Yes. Buying from a supplier who ships direct to your customer is a normal retail arrangement and no major market bans it. What gets stores shut down is what happens inside the model: selling branded or replica goods, making health or income claims in ads, and ignoring tax registration once you pass a threshold such as $100,000 of US state sales or the EU IOSS rules.
Read the answerWhat do I need for GDPR on a dropshipping store?
Eight things: a privacy policy naming every processor you use, a lawful basis for each purpose, consent collected before any non-essential cookie loads, an answer to any data access or deletion request within one month, a processing agreement with each vendor, transfer safeguards for processors outside the EEA, opt-in email marketing with no pre-ticked boxes, and breach notification within 72 hours.
Read the answerWhat should a dropshipping refund policy say?
Eight clauses: a 30-day window from delivery, who pays return shipping, a return address that is not in China, refund-without-return below roughly $40, free replacement on damaged or wrong items, the EU and UK 14-day withdrawal right, a refund timeline, and a working email plus a physical address. Return shipping to China costs $15-$30, which is more than the product.

Finding and validating something worth selling.
Do I need a paid spy tool to find dropshipping products?
Not under about 20 orders a day. Paid spy tools cost $30-$99 a month and show you what other people are already running. The free stack — the Meta Ad Library, TikTok Creative Center and AliExpress order sorting — surfaces the same products roughly 3-7 days later, and that lag does not matter at low volume.
Read the answerHow do you validate a dropshipping product before spending money?
Three free checks have to agree before you spend anything. One: the same ad has been running three or more weeks in the Meta Ad Library, which is the only public proof a product converts. Two: the AliExpress listing has recent reviews with photos, not just a high lifetime order count. Three: break-even ROAS comes out under 1.8. Then, and only then, a $250 test.
Read the answerIs a saturated dropshipping product bad?
Usually the opposite of bad. Three or more advertisers running the same product for three weeks or longer is public proof that the demand and the margin both exist, which is the hard part. Zero competitors is the real warning sign — it normally means the product was tested and failed. What kills a saturated product is a price war, not the number of sellers.
Read the answerWhat makes a product unsellable on paid ads?
A break-even ROAS above 1.8 disqualifies most of them, because no cold-traffic campaign in this niche clears that reliably. The others: retail under $25, which cannot absorb a $25-$35 CPA; a benefit you cannot show on camera in three seconds; a pitch that needs a health claim; batteries, liquids or anything over a kilogram; and anything trademarked.
